there are SO MANY variables in deciding how many hits/transfer a server can output.

It depends on type of traffic (ie. HTML, images, video, steady traffic vs. spikes) as well as HDD speed. Sometimes CPU and RAM can handle it but harddrives die. It also matters how well your Apache in configued and how much CGI/PHP/MYSQL etc.. you're running.

256 is VERY little memory for a server. My home PC has 512. With a Raq 4 450Mhz 512MB ram we pulled about 1.7Mbits, that's about 500GB of traffic a month but it was IDE and only 450Mhz

I know that a SCSI, 1GhZ CPU, 2GB RAM with no shtml, Cgi, php etc.. can pull about 1.5 million freehost uniques.
