You have to understand that Afghanistan is a much more complicated subject than that. The US did supply the Mujahadeen with weapons, in particular Stinger anti-aircraft missiles which had a large impact on the Soviet command of the air, but you must remember that Afghanistan shares a long border with Iran, and must have received most of their supplies from there. The Soviets invaded and installed a puppet Communist regime. You could therefore argue that the Soviets were responsible for the suffering of the Afghan people, and helped the rise of the Taliban, much more so than the US.
