My dogs did this, I have 3 so you can imagine how hard it is to stop once it gets going. An internationally acclaimed expert Sue Stromberg taught me this trick.
Put 10 or so pennies in a aluminum can, put duct tape over the opening. When the dog begins to bark , shake the can while repeating "QUIET" in a normal tone of voice. The violent rattling will startle him especially coming from you. This will not work immediately but when he stops barking for 15 seconds, praise him. Everytime he barks repeat this process. Eventually ( after many weeks/months of using the can to get their attention)all you have to say is the word QUIET and they will respond accordingly. It's amazing. It totally worked for me.
