Paid hosts have been known to crap out as well from time to time. They get hacked more than freehosts do I'd wager, because of the pay sites they host. Remote hosting is a gamble by any stretch, no doubt about it, but if you choose your freehost wisely it doesn't have to be a problem.

Last time I checked, many freehosts now host domain names.
Also, let's say my freehost craps out never to return. So, what's stopping me from uploading my site to a new freehost, sending out a quick email to all my trades with the new URL, and I'm back in the game? Again, this isn't rocket science, I've done this more than a few times over the past few years. It's a little inconvenient, but so what? Downtime in general is inconvenient, and pay servers have it too.

What frosts my ass is when other webmasters look down their noses at you when you offer a link trade. Some people have an elitist mentality about the stupidest things. I'll trade traffic with freehosted sites any time, as long as the site looks tight and the webmaster is on the ball. I don't judge anyone by where they host, because that's for idiots to be doing.

And for the record, I run sites on paid hosting as well. Just a different set of rules, a different set of headaches to deal with. That's all, traffic is traffic.
