Get out of Bangkok and see the North, South...Transportation is cheap, comfortable and works well so you can take an overnight sleeper-car train to anywhere and arrive fresh in the morning. Get off the tourist path and meet people and explore less touristy places so you can mingle more freely with the locals... My biggest tip is to take a few days and head east from Bangkok to Cambodia and see Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia. That was the highlight by far of my 3 month backpacking trip. After Ankor Wat you take a boat to the capital Phenom Peng and spend a few days there and then you can go down to their little seaport in Suhkumvit and take a boat back to Thailand and hang out on an island in the east like Ko Chang before heading back to Bangkok. This route take a lot of effort and is not luxury accomodations and living but its memorable.
