X-Men Director Singer Signs for Superman

Bryan Singer, who helmed the two successful "X-Men" movies, signed on to direct the new "Superman" film after yet another director has left the project. Tim Burton, Brett Ratner, Kevin Smith and even Richard Donner, who directed the Christopher Reeve "Superman" in 1978, have been attached to the project at some point. Last week, "Charlie's Angels" director McG left the project.

"My interest in Superman dates back many, many years. In fact, it was the Richard Donner classic film that was my day-to-day inspiration in shaping the X-Men universe for the screen," Singer tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I feel that Superman has been late in his return and it is time for him to fly again."

McG reportedly left the Warner Bros. project after differences over the budget and the filming location. He wanted to shoot the superhero story in New York, but the studio preferred a less expensive location in Australia.

Brendan Fraser, Nicolas Cage, Jude Law, Josh Hartnett and British actor Henry Cavil have all been tapped to play the Man of Steel on the big screen again, but none are yet signed on.

Singer's other projects, a "Logan's Run" remake and the third "X-Men" movie, now remain in limbo although Fox has already scheduled "X-3" for May 2006.
