Jesus existed. He was a Jewish rebel leading a political/religious group fighting against the Roman occupation, and got crucified by the Romans the same way they crucified all rebels. The term "messiah" in that day and age actually mainly referred to the person the Jews believed would eventually free them from the Romans.
The cult/resistance group was initially unsuccessful after Jesus' death, until Paul, a Roman, became a follower of the cult, and adapted it to fit Roman culture more and to make the Jews the main guilty party in killing Jesus.
