Agree with getting a dog.. just do it, they're friendly, and they warn you and chase critters away too.. Also, get a motion sensor floodlight. You can even get ones that signal you indoors if the light goes on outdoors.
Anywho, happy endings are great

We have the senor lights on all corner of the house. Our next door nieghbors do too and this week, someone broke in and robbed them. No one was physcally hurt, but they don't sleep as well at night. They also have a dog. The pet was not trained to protect, but typically makes noise when someone comes around.
The neigbors on the other side have a German Shepard. Someone comes in our yard he doesn't know and it's all teeth. I'm sure the four foot chainlink between the two properties is not a porblem for him. He respects it when we're in the yard + it took several weeks before he stopped barking at us after we moved in.
The problem is they often keep that dog in a pen with fence on all sides including the top and they take him in at night. That dog would make for some protection, no doubt!!
The right dog makes some sense if you are concerned. That's not the total solution. Maybe your brother should show you how to use a revolver if you don't already.
