But not to forget the contribution made by these.

Bob Dylan, suddenly lyrics could mean something.
The Who or more Pete Townsend. Tommy is a masterpiece.
Pink Floyd, look at the sales of Dark Side and not a "Pop" record.

The Stones, Santana, Steppenwolf, The Who and Zepplin were all great live bands.

Clapton, Hendrix, Skynard, Alvin Lee, Page were all great guitarists.

Unfortunately I can hardly think of two bands formed after 75 who hold a candle to any of these. Any ideas why this was a Golden Time for music and now it's just dross?

I agree with ya. Although there were a few groups from the 80's that were decent, such as The Police, Genesis, Van Halen, none of them had the same depth as the supergroups from the 70's. Even the groups that continued on for decades for the most part put their best stuff out in that time. The only exception I can think of is Floyd with Animals and The Wall, both masterpieces. Even then Animals was put out in I think 1977 or 78.

I've always felt it was the record companies that fucked up music, pushing the airwaves with this Madonna and Wham crap in the eighties and it just went on from there.
