Vancouver 'pot cafe' goes public

The owner of a café in Vancouver that openly sells marijuana is taking her story to the media, in the hopes that police and city officials will let her stay in business.

Carol Gwilt told reporters on Tuesday that her Da Kine Café on Commercial Drive has been selling marijuana over the counter for the past four months, but "flew under the radar" of officials.

She approached the media because she hopes to draw city and police attention. She wants to persuade them that her café is a vital part of Vancouver's plan to reduce the harm of drug use.

"It's something that's working, and something that should be applauded. And we do get applauded," she said.

The café sets a limit of one ounce ? about 28 grams ? for customers, who must be at least 19 years old but don't require a doctor's note.

They order it from a menu and staff fetch it from a back room, much like the famed cannabis cafés in Amsterdam.

Police in Vancouver said they just became aware of Gwilt's operation, which had drawn no complaints.

Const. Sarah Bloor said police will meet with city officials to decide what, if anything, should be done.
