My condolences! I've had a lot of animals in my day, and some I had to try to nurse back from the brink of death, (sometimes I won, mostly I didn't) and had many that the coyotes got, and a few that lived a long life and died quietly. I would say it is harder to lose a friend you have had for years than a pup that you have only known for a short while, but it still hurts. I would tell them about it and let them grieve. We tend to shelter our kids a little too much anymore, and it is good to let them start to realize what life and death are all about early.
