I'd think the Canadian property laws however progressive wouldn't be much different than our divorce laws at worst. I do know that if you can prove you had something going into a marriage a spouse isn't entitled to it in a divorce or if something was specifically given to you, it's yours.
Examples would be if I'd been running a business at a certain income level before getting married. None of my money problems with my ex would have meant a thing in the courts if I'd not started the biz while we were married. It would of been mine going in and mine coming out. Same thing with a home or other property. If it was yours going in, it's normally yours coming out.
