You have to be living together for 3 years to be considered common law spouses (unless a baby is born). Common law does recognize some spousel support obligations but not nearly as much as lawfully married spouses (no 50/50 split on divorce).

The Family Law Act of 1986 does not apply, I suggest you get a better lawyer.

PK, we had that in Canada until 1986. Before it was only "family assets" now it's "net family property" which is pretty much everything.
