Actually in Germany it's quite common. Many companies/people only register hyphenated domain. I really don't know why but that's the way it is.
We were once sued by a company with a very generic name and they only registered the hyphenated domain, we had the non-hyphenated domain. We went through two instances and won in both... in the end they paid a very good price for the domain on top of about $30K in legal fees
