The beauty of an OS like 98 (unlike the crap 2K) is you can do a soft install over the existing one.
Run set-up (setup) from a dos prompt and re-install you OS. (Yah, BillyBoy's message will say it is not recommended.)
Drivers and yadda yadda will be intact (some software links maybe severed, but that is a minimal problem).
I have many many friends that use various OSs, and my fav to fix is 98 - I perform soft installs all the time, with no problem!
(Try the function "repair OS" from a 2k or XP disc ... what a mess that is.)

shit, I forgot win98 can soft instal that easily, might be worth trying
