While i maintain that the first half of FMJ is the absolute best depiction of Marine Boot Camp i have ever seen i still say "Purple Hearts" was the better film featuring R. Lee Ermey.

I was attending Combat Squad Leader School at Camp Pendleton when the director of the school was Gunner Bolton (Gunner not Gunny very rare warrant officer rank in the Corps) one of his close friends was R. Lee Purple hearts was based on the accounts of a young basttlefield commissioned officer (Bolton) who had to call for fire on his own position.....he was one of only four survivors.

Anyway....we had a "Bunker" as they were called where we would sit in the NCO lounge and listen to some old crusty bastard tell us how things were back in the day. Usually a highly decorated combat vet....

I was fortunate to have R. Lee as a special guest....then ran into him again with Captain Dale Dye who has become the premeir military advisor to feature film.....
