Metal never left. It just wasnt trendy enough for MTV for the last 10 years.
I personally hate all this numetal crap you see on MTVX. Its all pop metal. Cmon, Linkin Park? Its basically an edgy boy band. Creed? Power ballad soft metal for 40 year olds. Slipknot / Sevendust / Mudvayne. Fucking circus acts. Blend a little metal with some breakdowns stolen from the last 15 years of hardcore, and you get that shit. This kind of horrible metal shit did not exist 3 or 4 years ago. Why? Wasnt trendy. Remember when Skacore was big for awhile? Hair metal? Its all trendy shit, the flavor of this year is rapcore numetal I wanna be gimp bizkit faggoty ass cunt rock.
BUT good metal still exists, always has and always will.
Lately, for some odd reason, I been getting into the European Black metals scene. Black metal dont sound the same as it did 5 years ago. Some of this shit is just sick. Lately I been listening to alot of Cradle of Filth, Dominion Caligula, Insomnium, Year of Our Lord, Aborym, Alghazanth, In Ruins. And all the old hardcore standbys like Cold as Life, Hatebreed, Blood For Blood, Redemtpion 87. All of it amazing, and shares on thing in common, it will never be poppy enough for mtv... 16 year old girls wont think it "kicks ass".
That is the true test of metal/hardcore. If a 16 year old at Hot Topic is loving it, its pure unadulterated shit. Metal was not meant to be pretty, and was not meant to be popular.
Like punk on mtv. How fucking punk is it to be on MTV? I remember when punk used to mean you were a dirty stinky outcast. Now you can call yourself punk and be all over teenage girls walls coast to coast.
If it hits mtv it is no longer metal, nor is it no longer punk. Its TOP 40.
TOP fucking 40.
