Training Day could have been acted by any one of 200 actors or so, giving roughly the same result.
That particular role did not demand any of Denzels superior qualities which he has displayed so masterfully in other brilliant performances during his career. That movie was average because the actor had no room to make the movie spectacular.

Russell had by far a more challenging role that showed qualities he has previously not brought to light, and that?s that. The movie just happens to be as good as his performance, in it's own right!

Why else did he win every award leading up to the Oscars?
Because the Academy knows something that everyone else managed to overlook, or because they were busy correcting their own mistakes and arrogant oversights?
