(SOC) simply means that the Marine Exbeditionary Unit
was Special Operations Capable Lots of Marines that are not in
Force Recon ( The Marinces Spec Ops Groups ) can be with in a MEU (SOC)
and you are right about Ex-Mrine its not heard very often
however Former Marine is a very common term

And no, I was never in Force Recon (1st Force recon was down the road in CAMPEN), but had a stint in company Recon for a year as their Fire Support Man (and FSCC) NCOIC...
