Boy, do you have this backwards.
Japan attacked us, and we chased them all the way across the Pacific Ocean back to Japan. They were brave, but even when defeat was obvious they refused to admit it. We had a choice between nuking them and invading mainland Japan. Which do you think would have killed more people?
BTW, much more damage was done by firebombing cities in Japan (and German).
