I believe the dating web sites (like Match.com) "work" in direct proportion to both your "ugliness" and the "desperation" of those with which you are trying to "hook up."
I've reformulated the statement in this way:
(The level of your ugliness) * (The desperation of your intended partner) = Your chance of success
1 = couldn't be any more
0 = couldn't be any less
So for example, if you are really ugly (lets say a
.7) and you are trying to hook up with someone who isn't desperate (lets say a
.1) then your chance of "success" would be a
.07 (which is basically
NO chance).
However . . .
Even if you are REALLY ugly, I mean HIDEOUS (lets say a
.90) but you are trying to hook up with someone who is EXTREMELY desperate (lets say a
.85) then your chance of "success" would be a
.765 which really is a pretty darn good chance!
ALERT: This formula does not work for good-looking people.
