Pope John Paul II is returning to the Rome hospital where he was treated earlier this month for flu-related breathing problems.
The Vatican said he had suffered a relapse of his flu condition.
The 84-year-old Pope spent 10 days in the Gemelli Hospital earlier this month. He returned home on 10 February.
He suffers from Parkinson's Disease and painful arthritis in his legs. He had to miss a Vatican engagement - a consistory - on Thursday.
