if it's a simple thing to hit the 'whois' database they're easy to create and have been around forever.
now it if's something that can somehow detect from verisign's registry (which they themselves claim "we don't know when domains are actually deleted") then it is something i want to see too!
my friend wrote a script back in 98 to do a daily (or at a set interval) check of domain names and register them if available. it's not too hard =) the problem is verisign holds on to domains of 'value' even though it's supposedly an automated removal process ~ 40 days after expiry date.
