As to mushy peas, well of course the canned variety is only a distant relation of what the fish and chip "oyles" in Lancashire sold when I was a kid. Still my family over here get very upset if I serve fish and chips without them.

well, the last chippie I was in that sold them were using the same canned brand I buy so I figured I was okay. Chips with curry sauce isn't that bad either.
