Personally, I find it best to use something less offensive.
I was driving around in LA one day and I saw a mexican driving a low rider with a bumper sticker that said "Brown Pride", later in that same trip, I saw a riced out Honda with a vietnamese guy driving it that also had the same bumper sticker.
Having seen this, I derived that they are both proud to be of brown skin tone.
That in mind, instead of trying to deduce the nationality of a brown person, I refer to them all as Brownies. Japanese=Brownie, Mexican=Brownie, Panamanian=Brownie, Korean=Brownie, Eskimo=Brownie.
I mean think of it, everyone lumps white people together when they see a white guy. So I think it's fair.
