He's not kidding. The simulators work like a charm. I specifically recommend Dave Brown's Flight Simulator but I'm not sure if his stuff is still around. It was great in years past though. (around '95)

As for airplanes, I recommend the Great Planes Ultrasport 60 with a .60 Thunder Tiger engine, and one of the higher end JR computer radios. That's basically what's sitting on my shelf right now.
