While I've never used AGSQL myself, I've heard a lot of people using it complaining about slowing down their sites. I DID try using it once and I found the template system to be uncomprehensible, ended up giving up on it immediately.
I've long been a strong promoter of Comus Thumbs, I think it's an amazing script, if you learn to use it right. No other script offers you the flexibility Comus does, however, you need to learn to choose between the most needed features, as using every bell and whistle it has will likely turn the script into a major resource hog. There's also a support board for it and you can find a lot of useful answers there, if you learn to put that search function to good use.
On a comparison note between AGSQL and Comus Thumbs, there's not a single person I know who changed from the former to the latter and didn't experience almost immediate site growth. Sure, Comus is a bit more expensive, but it's your call whether you prioritize paying less for a script or having your site grow a lot better.
