No kids I fathered, but two of them had kids.
And my experience tells me that there is absolutely no way that being a *step father* will ever work.
Back in the days when the father if the house was king, and a little bit feared, maybe it had a chance. Maybe if the kids are young when the relationship starts.
But when you get together and the kids are passed 10, it will just never work.
