I'd like to see what is illegal about what he did. You guys simply left the doors open and didn't even attempt to lock them.
One could argue that you didn't take proper steps to keep confidential information private and could leave you personally responsible for the data loss. It's kinda like walking into someones office and them leaving their client lists out on the table for everyone to see.
Can't blame people for looking..
