i'm against the use of 'under god' in the pledge, as i am against 'in god we trust' on US currency. it goes against what the country was founded on (at least, in part).

but in any case, i heard on NPR this morning that WA state law is that students must perform "daily flag exercises" (the pledge isn't legislated itself, but it is a flag exercise). my question is - why do they have to do daily flag exercises? as it's only done in youth and maybe military service, it seems to me like nothing more than brainwashing, to keep people "in line".

if the goal wasn't brainwashing, i think the students would be better served if they were required to write an essay or some sort of report on US history and events every couple of months.
