most smut is shot with too much light, too high an f/stop, with too small a light source, with improper placement of lights.
so there is no modeling, no DOF control, no balancing of the light behind the model, etc.
the REASON everyone says "hot" on this shot of just an above average girl is because of the photographer, not the girl.
look at what is done here:
1. big lens opening, so it isolates the girl's face from the books on the shelf
2. back lighting, to give the illusion of ambiant light.
3. proper light position to the side, to give modeling.
4. not too hot so we can see the curves on the girl.
etc, etc.
it is is mostly the shooter's attention to detail that makes people think this girl is "hot".
give the same girl to a different shooter and you will get "fugly" comments.
