The rewards of parenting
Every once in a while, your kids tell you something that makes it obvious that they have been paying attention. Tonight, was one of those times.
My daughter and I went out for dinner, and during the course of conversation she reminded me of something that had happened back when she was going to UC Davis.
She had become friends with some guy, then he introduced her to this girl he has started dating, and she became friends with the girl. The guy and girl ended up breaking up, and things got weird in the relationship with the guy. Thing is, he had a couple of books that belonged to my daughter, and while she really wanted the books back, she did not want to approach him.
I asked her how much the books would cost to replace, and she said it was minor amount (under $20). I told her that if she could get out of a weird relationship for under $20, it was a helluva deal, and she should be glad to get off so easy. She agreed, and went on her merry way.
Well, apparently one of her girlfriends is going thru a breakup with her boyfriend, and the boyfriend has one of the girl's DVDs.
My daughter asked her if the DVD cost less than $20. It did. My daughter then told her, what I had passed along to her several years ago. "You got out for under $20. Consider yourself lucky."
We were laughing about it, but inside, it made me glad to know that my kids were paying attention, and passing along these pearls of wisdom to their friends.
Like she said, "even if that was the only thing I ever learned, it was a pretty valuable piece of advice."
