It is paradoxical that many "Christian" fundamentalists in the US all but reject the teachings of Christ himself, in favor of the fire and brimstone of the Old Testament. But although these people tend to be very vocal and influential here, don't lose site of the reality that they are only a small part of the global Christian population.

That said, when it comes to being sent to war, it doesn't make much practical difference whether or not someone believes their bible sanctions their actions. To stay in business, religious institutions the world over have accomodated themselves to the needs of state for centuries and few individuals are willing to test their morality against authority. In fact, Israel is the only country I know of in which large number of soldiers have been willing to go to prison rather than obey what they consider to be immoral orders.
