I've never heard that about goggle before. However, I know that well configured web servers can last a long time. If a server is configured well and optimized for the needs of the site, then the difference between a p3 and p4 don't amount to much.
The real cost in hosting is configuration and support. Sometimes, it is the best option to clone a second server with hardware that you know works well then use hardware that you're not sure about.
