maybe everyone should do what derek from xamo used to do.
launched a free host, it'd been opened to weeks, then he jumped me on icq.
went something like this:
derek: hey man can you test this url for me?
me: sure
derek: {address of his freehost}
me: looks good. yes, i've seen it on the boards about two weeks ago
derek: can you test the page for me?
me: i saw it when you posted it a few weeks back. any new features since when?
derek: no
me: good luck with the project
derek: so can you test the page for me?
me: i did. but like i said, i don't use free hosting. and if you didn't change anything then it works fine.
derek: it looked fine on my machine, but i don't know whether others can see it
me: as i mentioned, it works fine for me
derek: so can you see the page
me: yeah, i've said it looks fine
derek: can you test the signup page for me?
me: sorry man -- i don't use freehosting
derek: i need to see whether the email confirmation works
me: didn't you try it with your own email addy
derek: yes, it worked but i need to see whether it works for other people
me: ok, i'll try it on an old email addy (signed up with derekhost@mydomain)
derek: thanks
me: got the confirmation
derek: great, i really think we have some of the smallest headers in the industry
i could see where this shit was going... already told the guy i don't use free hosting... the conversation stopped just about there.
what happened a few days later?
that email addy was spammed like fucking crazy.
