I usually upgrade em every few years at most. Definately stay away from LCD and DLP they are very DIM and still suffer bad viewing angles on many of them. The newer plasmas dont burn in unless you have a static pic for like 4 hours, shouldnt be a problem.

My LCD is great, its rear projection though. I love it. Was a great price too. But you're right, need to keep in mind how long it will be until you buy a new one. I went 2 years with my last TV, my new one will probably be longer though. I really don't see many upgrades coming out shortly that will top what I already have.
