Nuclear Fusion

What exactly is nuclear fusion? Mixing two protons in one pot to make one particle? ...Obviously not?... how can two fundamental particles be united?...

hmm... I'm struggling to grasp what might be going on here.
Whilst we're discussing this, can somebody also tell me how we actually 'split the atom'? Wouldn't the energy required to split an atom only be available once an atom splits?
I obviously don't know, but would like to.
