The electromagnetic fields on the North and South Poles protect the planet from intense solar radiation. When the fields begin a reversal process the north and south fields begin to gradually weaken until they go into a state of flux and wobble and then reverse. The north will be south and south will be north.

During the transistion the atmosphere gets bombarbed with above normal amounts of solar energy. The energy is heat. Heat changes the planets weather patterns.

You get incredibly unusual weather everywhere which is what we've been seeing in the past few years and the intensities of storms goes off the charts.
