I've not got the stats handy, but a friend who specializes in "helping govts out" on their eco policies (got a massive budget for this!) was of the opinion shit would hit the fan kinda quick and explained it simply:
Imagine the human race in a cup. The cup is 10% full. The population of the cup doubles every, say, 10 years. When it's 50% full, it would take only 10 years to have it overflowing and no longer sustainable.
BTW.. Most govts know this very well - it has been talked about enough and have been presented with the data, but just avoid the issue since they won't be around when it happens.
There is one massive problem on the horizon with everything from population growth, environment and food production blah.
