Google used to be able to spider the web all at once - usually on about a four week cycle.
1. Shallow Crawl
2. Follow-up Deep Crawl
3. Sort Their Spider's Page Cache
4. Evaluate PR Accordingly
Since they expanded their DB to 8+ billion pages - roughly double what it was about a year ago, they have to to their updates in chunks now.
Congrats on your PR's if they have improved, because that will improve your page placement for a seach of your targeted keywords.
Be aware however, that Google will do a preliminary PR if it is still compiling the current crawl. Check your PR again in about a week to make sure your are indeed where you think you are.
