Horseygirl,
Ads aren't necessarily a bad thing, especially if they are the type of ad that appear to be part of the content. Stacking them on top of each other in the bottom of pages without a unique design treatment has diminishing returns.
If you're going to run ads, which I encourage you to do, you may want to change the type you're running. It seems like you're running all affiliate/referral programs. Check out my sig if you want to run some ads that pay you for every ad/impression served instead of per sale. You could probably cut down on the number of ads you show, make a lot more (and guaranteed b/c it's paid per impression) revenue, and make your site more "likeable" by viewers. It would even increase the click through rate (CTR) on the ads which should lead to more conversions for the advertiser (which means they would probably pay more for the placements).
I don't want to sound too "promotional" so you can check out the feature story XBiz ran on us this week at
http://xbiz.com/news_piece.php?id=11169 and/or check out my sig.
Hope that helps.
