As for most of the movies on the list being from pre 1950 - possibly, that only goes to show how timeless a great piece of movie making can be. I personally think that the greatest decades for movies is the 30's and the 70's.

The 30's include:
  • Gone With The Wind
  • The Wizard Of Oz
  • Dodsworth
  • The Informer
  • King Kong
  • The 39 Steps
  • A Freedom For Us
  • The Blue Angel
  • The Bitch
  • M
  • The Vampire

The 70's include:
  • The Godfather
  • Taxi Driver
  • Apocalypse Now
  • Chinatown
  • Clockwork Orange
  • Jaws
  • Annie Hall
  • The Conversation

Both great decades for film making.
I don't know much about movie making in the 30s, but you're right on about the 70s. You have to add Cukoo's Nest to the 70s list. An all-time classic.
