No simple is good. If Google hasn't proven this to you by now nothing will. Ebay, Yahoo, Google, and a myriad of other HUGE ass sites are simple. Ease of use and content rank 1 and 2 while a pretty design that artsy fags will masturbate over ranks at around 3000 on the importance meter. We're glad you can make designs that people go WOW over but that isn't what makes people click.
