I completely agree, but it isn't the same sport. When I'm playing football with my friends I don't wear pads and it's full contact. I'm not going to get hurt because we're all about the same size / strength.
Once you get to the pro level you basically have these huge players, some of which are heavily juiced on steroids, and if they hit you once and you weren't wearing padding they could possibly cripple you or kill you.
Rugby players are in great shape, its a tough sport, but if I was given an option to play Rugby where the players aren't that much bigger than I am or play football where I'm giving up 140lbs...yeah, I think I'd play Rugby.
