I'm of course not speaking for all webmasters but probably a large portion of them want to see your portfolio - when they want to see it and don't want to have to jump thru hoops to see it.

I would suggest having a public portfolio that would be non-explicit and they can email for a password if they need to see more explicit stuff. They should be able to get a good idea of your skills without needing that password though cause most won't take the time to ask for one
