If it's a recent model laptop then there shouldn't be any probs with replacing the HD, but you may run into some hurdles with reinstalling everything. Did your lappy come with a restore disk? You may also want to buy a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter to see if you can read the drive's contents in a desktop PC.
I don't need anything huge or fast for storage is what I meant by cheap. Just a browsing/email system at this point for a disabled relative. Just wondered if I could order any new 2.5" hard drive, use the restore CD and take it to them.

Nothing was on the disk that wasn't already backed up, so I don't need to try and get anything off it.
