I am the one that was taken advantage of here. He was slated to be paid, that was never a question before all of this.

So you can change the deal at any time for whatever reason you like? He has enough saved dialogue between you two to constitute a binding agreement, one that he could easily enforce and win should he decide to. He seems like a nice guy as he hasn't badmouthed you, just wants to be paid. He offered you to settle and pay him half, you won't even do that.
