I don't think it would have anything to do with lack of higher education, but perhaps lack of any serious heath education in grade school and communities which don't back that education up with places or ways to stay active.

I was running my ebay business out of Boulder, Co for the last year. It's sort of a small town in a sense out side of the Denver Metro area but still big enough. (sort of a tech/hipster town now days Google, HP, ect..ect have set up shop there)

What was interesting to me, is the kids from the high school everyday after school a very large amount of the kids would jog up the creek trail and back. Probably 5 miles I'd guess. This was a daily ritual and it wasn't just the football jocks or the track kids. It was a pretty good mix of kids from that school. (obviously that school/community has put a focus on teaching kids to exercise)

The town was also set up so you could bike or walk all over the place with ease, due to this people actually walked, jogged or rode bikes to almost an annoying extent if you were driving.. If you go to that town you do not see many over weight people.

Meanwhile not even 20 miles up the road is Longmont, it's a similar sized town but doesn't have nice bike paths and you just don't see people out riding bikes or walking like you do in Boulder.. It's is literally night and day difference between the quality of ass in those 2 towns only 20 miles apart...

If there's not a lot to do, people eat. My theory at least.

yup brass is right.. I live in a town of around 1k and it's a lot of farmers and hunters in the area. In the summer there are hotties in Daisy dukes out and about.. Some farmers might be overweight but they are for sure not obese with the type of work they have to do.
