It's definitely possible to make money. Depending on the plan, you'd really only have to get a few customers to start earning profit. -
Yes! We host many successful resellers. If you need assistance, we are here to help

When just starting out, most people to do not have the means to purchase hardware, networking equipment, and bandwidth in bulk. Not to mention marketing dollars on top of that. Especially when they are not even certain they can be competitive and profitable in the market place.
Starting out with reseller hosting is an easy way for someone to get their feet wet in the business to see if they can make a go of it. After a few 3am phone calls, they might discover this business is not for them, haha

The 3am phone calls are usually not the best but if you have a passion for hosting you wont really mind it.When just starting out, most people to do not have the means to purchase hardware, networking equipment, and bandwidth in bulk. Also to hire a QUALIFIED sysadmin, which they can do either before or after their systems get rooted. Hosting is like a lot of things - it looks like a very attractive, high margin business until you actually do it in the real world, where Murphy's law applies. When just starting out, most people to do not have the means to purchase hardware, networking equipment, and bandwidth in bulk. Not to mention marketing dollars on top of that. Especially when they are not even certain they can be competitive and profitable in the market place.
We already HAVE a cabinet with a good price on bandwidth, a $2000 IP KVM, switches, etc. for Clonebox. I already have fourteen years of server admin experience, but you don't see us advertising hosting - even though we already HAVE the equipment and expertise. We also already have experience with hosting customers who reach up huge bills and then don't pay and thee other negatives of hosting, so you don't see that service offered on our site.
We actually DO host a few select people whom we know. Only if we already know that someone will pay their bills on time, not send spam, not attract DMCA or other negative attention, etc. does it makes sense to us to host them. So even though we already have the infrastructure and the right staff, ours is invitation only because public hosting is a difficult business. For historical display only. There is a huge opportunity to make money on webhosting business but it's very hard work because of competition on this niche. I agree with others - it's better to sell dedicated servers.Sell your popup, mobile and popunder traffic - Poponclick.com - CPM ad network - can generate direct url to ads

I wouldn't want to do it. Chase people down to pay, spammers, security issues.

If you are running your mock of the run hosting company like most other people in both adult in mainstream you might make enough to get by but you are not going to get rich doing it in todays world.
Money hosting most mainstream sites and esp adult sites are filled with alot of people who either have very little money which theres nothing wrong with and people who require so much time its not worth it.
However, new data centers are popping up everyday in places like la, huston, dallas, seattle. new york, yadi yadi yadi.
What you want to do is fine the next development business area that is growing fast, and rent or buy a building and start a data center. When it comes to colocation the big companys pay top dollar for security, bandwidth, and knowing that some tech monkey is there in case they need a reboot.E-mail marketing - Automation Scripting - IP Space

If you're going to start a web hosting company my tip is to not bother with a reseller account. If it's something you're not sure about then that's one thing, but if you're serious about it you need to go straight to a dedicated server.Comment

Nothing is free, especially money. Legal, Bandwidth, Employees... I know people who have tried to start their own ground up hosting companies and they end up saving by dropping there servers and sublet from the big boys. Lets face it, its easier (and cheaper) to upgrade bandwidth when you are buying hundreds of fibers instead of the few that you will need to get going.
The shared hosting market is saturated, and all of the business is full of gimicks. People looking for an easy buck. Want to make an easy buck? If this is your attitude then you already failed.
Edit: Example that the cost of the server will be CHEAPER then the cost of backing that server up!Last edited by Kostly; 10-21-2011, 03:04 AM.Comment

Starting a hosting company 10 years ago, yes. Starting a company in todays market without some sort of a niche or a large anchor customer to get you off the ground.. or you just have tons of money to throw at something and hope it works.. then yes like every other business you can make it work.
This is by no means a fast dollar. Although lots of kids these days start as resellers. spam low cost shared hosting/vps and then dissapear next month and end up screwing over god knows how many people.
I hope to god you know something about servers, and I mean more than clicking links in cpanel.Comment

You can make a decent chunk of change, yes.
HOWEVER.... you must get into niches, and do some networking. If you think you are just going to lock horns with established companies on high quality clients and get those deals closed, you'll lose. You are going to have to get started through price, partnerships, and some aggressive marketing.
Hosts are a dime a dozen. You have to do 'something' better than your competitors.
Good luck!

Agree with most of the other people who've replied here. It's definitely not easy and if you are not familiar with how to manage servers without a control panel, you can be in for a rough ride.
Take your time, do some research and if you really want to do it, then good luck to you
There is definitely money to be made...just don't be one of those "companies" that is there one day and gone the next.

niches are the answer, we have a hosting company as well and been at it for 6 years but focus on a niche, its the only way we can compete. (no I will not share my niche, nonadult)PRVEGAS.com - Headlining Shows, Buy Vegas Tickets,Book A Hotel Room - Online Since 2008Comment
