You are more likely to be punished by host for getting too much traffic then by google. You can use tools to cut down on backlinks of your so concerned but all my business is due to backlinking.

free backlink services work fine if you want to list a website very fast. But its no quality ranking, only quantity. At moment google want blacklist you. But it can be changed very fast. Its free, yes. You need to know with using the ranking sites you make them famous and some will offer you pay services as well. Your mailbox will be never empty ;)
